Fasting for Special Intentions

Nine years ago when I was deathly ill, I wasn’t able to sleep for almost six months. That story is a whole book in itself for another time, but what my mom used to do is truly my favorite example of fasting. I needed sleep so desperately that there were nights that my mom would give up her sleep for me and offer it up with her prayer for me so I could get a night’s sleep. The amazing thing is I wouldn’t even know she would do this, but I would sleep maybe one night a week, and it would end up being the night she had secretly given up her sleep to God as a sacrifice so I would have some rest to help me heal. While fasting is a wonderful and beautiful sacrifice to God so that we become stronger in him, it’s even more beautiful when it’s done for someone else and not for your own spiritual strengthening.
